“A condition called thrush may occur in a woman’s vagina, which is caused by an overgrowth of yeast called candida. Billions of microorganisms (such as bacteria and yeast) live in our gut and are responsible for many functions, such as digestion and immune support. Candida albicans is the name of a group of yeasts that are commonly found in a number of species, including humans. Thrush occurs when there’s a lack of healthy bacteria in the body, allowing the candida to grow fast and multiply excessively. Vaginal thrush is categorised by itching, irritation and discharge,” she explains.

According to Monique, these are the foods you should be eating for a fresh and healthy vagina:

Include a variety of healthy unprocessed foods, oats and wholewheat

Fresh juice, particularly pineapple, orange and cranberry

Plain yoghurt

Eggs

Avocado

Strawberries

Green tea

Also consider a probiotic supplement to increase the amount of healthy bacteria in circulation in your body to counterbalance candida. This enhances immune function and increases resistance to infection.

Eight cups of water a day
