Hair Fix: Cover greys the natural way!

‘What is the best remedy for grey hair strands? I also prefer to keep it natural’ – Sibongile

There are two options you can try: henna or a natural hair dye.

Henna is a chemical-free dye, made from a plant, that penetrates the hair shaft and changes your hair colour. You can find henna at most beauty supply shops, Indian specialty shops or chemists. It’s usually sold as a powder which you can then mix using water or black tea. It forms a paste, which you then apply to your hair and cover for a few hours. Be sure to use gloves when applying the henna and cover your forehead and ears in Vaseline to avoid dyeing your skin. Once you’ve rinsed the henna out, you can then shampoo and condition as normal. Note that, the longer you keep the henna on, the darker your hair will be. Henna can only darken your hair colour and not lighten it, but there are variants in different reds, mahoganies and browns. You might need multiple applications before your greys are completely covered.

Natural hair dyes, such as Herbatint, are sold at various health shops around the country. These dyes are usually made with herb extracts and plant proteins and won’t change or damage your hair’s structure. Mix the dye according to the instructions on the box and apply to dry hair.
