How to kick-start your exercise routine

Health and wellness coach Anele Mdemka of Apex Aesthetica trains celebrities such as rapper Cassper Nyovest, TV personality Luthando ‘Lootlove’ Shosha and hip-hop duo Major League Djz. 

Here are his tips on how to activate your fitness goals:

Get active

Start small. Don’t sign up for a 30-day fitness challenge that you can’t maintain. A 30-minute walk around your neighbourhood or running with the kids in the garden will make a difference. They key is to be active.

Seek professional help

If you want to transform your body but have no idea how, get a qualified trainer to assist you. When choosing a trainer, find someone who specializes in what you want. If you want to be athletic, for example, find a trainer who specializes in that and if you want a summer body then you go look for someone who can create the body you want. If you are serious about the lifestyle transformation then do go for someone who is qualified and has a common goal.

Ditch the scale

I’m not a fan of numbers because people step on the scale to see change, and the moment they don’t see it, they become demotivated. Instead, work on an effort-and-reward system. Focus on one item of clothing you’d like to fit into. Try it on every two weeks or so, and use that as your progress report.
