Being at the gym and realising you need something, but don't have it with you can throw you out of sync. Here are some tips on how to ensure you have all the right things.
It's simple things that can easily be forgotten, so we’ve got you covered with the list of essentials that need to make it.
The right clothes
Pack the right clothes, that fit well and dry easily. Stay away from workout clothes that are 100% cotton fabric – although this might seem like a comfortable option, the fabric traps perspiration and dry slowly. Some gym gear comes with it's own ventilation, so shop around for good gym clothes that will support your fitness goals.
It’s really important to find the right shoes for your type of training – whether you’re a boxer, runner, cyclist or lifter. Sufficient support can contribute to stability and alleviate pressure on your back and knees.
Music & earphones
Having music on, can be great for keeping you motivated. So have your own personalised jams on your phone or mp3 device and you can be good to go for the workout session you have planned. Just makes sure your volume is at reasonable level that you can hear and still be aware of your surroundings.
A pre-workout snack
Registered Dietician at Virgin Active South Africa, Sandi van Zyl recommends eating a light meal 1-2 hours before your workout. If you’re short on time, a snack just before you work out will also do.
She suggests a snack low in fibre and fat, such as oats and half a cup of berries or 3/4 cup of Greek yoghurt with spoon of granola or half a cup of berries.
Something to drink
When exercising, it's important to keep hydrated. Water is a definite non-negotiable. Try an Infuser water bottle ( to add flavour of your choice) if you're not particularly fond of drinking water.
A towel is a simple, but necessary accessory one often forgets to pack. So you can wipe the machines or sit on it, no one likes someone else’s sweat. Ideally, get one with a small pocket and zip; useful to keep your phone or important belongings inside and with you at all times during your workout.
