You had a major 2018! How are you feeling?
I feel like 2018 was great, and I’m so happy. It has literally been the biggest year of my life for a number of reasons. I clinched the song of the year honour, and I had my son, who is my biggest blessing. Also, I turned 30 last year, which was cause for a celebration. It actually felt like it was a transitional year, filled with many affirmations.

What’s the formula to a hit song?
There is no formula – you just do what you do. If people like it, they deem it a hit and if not, you go back to the drawing board and you try again. I don’t leave the studio until I am satisfied. I feel like if I, and the people in studio with me, enjoy a track a lot, then someone else will relate.
Your lyrics have a ‘girl power’ element to them. Is that intentional?
Definitely! I’m a feminist to the core. I know that feminism means different things to different people but to me, it means I am pro-woman. I am all about women doing what they want, how they want, when they want and with whomever they want, and taking it to the level they want to take it.
How do you balance your demanding schedule and being a new mom?
Well, my life right now is just that: lots of gigging and spending time with my little man. That’s it. Everything else has stopped. If I’m not at work, I’m home with my son and it’s really the happiest life I could have ever imagined. I get to work and do what I love and then go home to a loving family. However, it can be hard sometimes. I mean, in December last year, my helper had to go home for the holidays. That meant three weeks without my full-time helper, while also having to attend my gigs at the same time. So, the support system was really important.
Someone once said, “When a child is older at your funeral, they never say ‘Thank you, mom, for all the money you made.’ But, they will say ‘Thank you for being there with and for me, through it all.’ So, I want my son to remember me being there with and for him, through it all.
What’s the one fashion item you can’t travel without and why?
I love bodysuits. I feel like they keep everything together. They feel comfortable when I dance, and I can wear them on their own, layered with other items. I’m actually obsessed with bodysuits! I mean, they work so well with my body when I sit down or when I do the vosho!
What’s on the cards for Busiswa in 2019?
I’m definitely coming for everything! All the collaborations I have ever dreamed of, everywhere in the world – I am going for it. Let us see how that pans out, though. I’m also pushing for my album Summer Life to reach platinum status with a tour and fire visuals. I’m not playing around! I want to be the Best Female Everything! So, wish me luck and pray with me!
