When is the album coming out?
The album is coming out at the end of October this year.
What can we expect from the album?
There’s a new approach in terms of sound, it won’t be as gritty as the last one. It’s more melodic and I’m doing other things vocally – it’s reminiscent of the style I did back in the Teargas days but giving it a modern interpretation.
How has it been putting together the album?
I feel I was misunderstood and decided to be open up. With this album, people are going to appreciate that they’re getting to know me. They are going to know about my personal story, for the first time I’m putting out a biographical album. From my parents to my upbringing and siblings – you’re going to feel like you’re with me.
Why did you decide to open up now?
I’m looking at my legacy and I’m thinking this is my 11th year in the music industry. People don’t know anything about me beyond K.O from Teargas or K.O of Caracara. When I look at my idols like Jay Z you pretty much have idea of his backstory and who his mother is. I feel if I can activate that wing in my brand I’ll be able to resonate with people a bit more.
How do you feel about the Cash Time drama?
When I created Cash Time it was a selflessness thing. I decided I wanted to usher in other guys. I gave people a chance to make a living and make a difference in their lives. As far as business works, if someone wants to leave and feels they will grow elsewhere you let them leave, and not hold them back. But when people turn around and make it seem like I didn’t want others to shine, it wasn’t like that. The module was based on what everyone brought to the table. It was never based on ‘you can give us a dud and we’ll throw money at it and make it to a Caracara’. It’s about the quality of the work.
Do you feel you don’t get proper recognition in the industry?
I do feel I don’t get championed in the game, but if I was I wouldn’t be making this album. I feel with award shows, I do get side lined. My last album was strong. Caracara made history. But I’m not concentrating on that.
How do you deal with negativity?
I think for the first time in my life I’m working through my feelings. I even posted on social media about how I feel. I feel like I’m working on the best work in my life and all that has made me dig deeper in my creative tank.
What else are you busy with?
I’ve got my clothing label that is coming out called ‘Skhanda Republic’, based on my first solo album. I’m dropping the spring collection really soon. I’m hoping by December it will be one of the prime street clothing labels in the country. I’m also busy with my own record label of the same title. But I’ve decided I’m not signing anyone for now after the whole Cashtime saga. I don’t want to be distracted. For now I’m rebuilding myself.
