The MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) is approaching soon and we finally know a little more about the event! South African Afro-pop duo Mafikizolo and Nigerian sensation Davido are revealed to be the first performers of the extravagant music show. Leading the pack, Davido, Mafikizolo and Uhuru are tied as the most nominated artists this year, with 4 nominations each. The three battle for Song of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration. Davido is also nominated for Best Male while Mafikizolo holds their ground in Best Group. MAMAs will be taking place at the ICC, Durban, South Africa on Saturday 7 June. The awards will have its first time ever premiere across Africa LIVE on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and MTV (DStv Channel 130) at 21h00 CAT. You can expect stunning performances from African and international artists, including the awards’ signature collaborations between artists of different genres and cultures. The nominees in this year’s music categories range sub-Saharan Africa include 2Face, Burna Boy, Chidinma, Danny K, Davido, DJ Kent, Dr Malinga, Dr Sid, Efya, Espoir 2000, Khuli Chana, Mafikizolo, Casa, Olamide, Oskido, P Square, Professor Savage, Toofan, Uhuru, Zakes Bantwini and more. The newly introduced lifestyle award categories have Chimamanda Adiche, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Trevor Noah, Lupita Nyong’o and Yaya Toure nominated for Personality of the Year. Clarence Peters, Leti Arts, Rasty and Anisa Mpungwe are nominated in Transform Today by Absolut. The nominees for the MTV Base Leadership award and Best International are yet to be announced. Thousands of votes have already been cast, but that shouldn’t stop you!
