Actress and producer Nolo Phiri collaborates with Abongile Gwele of Apples and Oranges for her fashion line.
Please tell us about your line.I’d like to make it clear that Apple and Oranges is not my line, but it’s collaboration between designer Abongile Gwele and I. She approached me last year about wanting to associate her line with my brand, so she started dressing me for a few events. We got together for this collaboration to do a Nolo Phiri for Apples and Oranges. This collaboration was to empower each other as brands.
Will we be seeing more of these collaborations?Yes. I have a project where I intend on collaborating with young designers, not only in fashion but watches, jewelry and everything else. I studied fine arts and I understand how difficult it is to break into the business so I want to help young artists to cross the commercial line while fusing it with showbiz. I want to expose young designers to the business side of things.
How involved were you with the designs?I was involved every step of the way. I chose my own designs. It was important for both Abongile and I to fuse each other’s styles and brands to the line, and we worked for three months to achieve this.
How are people responding to it?People are buying to it. I know most people didn’t know what to expect but I see people are starting to understand that it’s a collaboration with Nolo Phiri and not my line. In the beginning, I didn’t think it would be this big, but it is.
What’s the price range?Because we’re trying to cater for the young women who just got out of school, we are catering for someone who’s trying to climb the ladder; someone who wants to be sexy yet still representable. We’ve made the prices quite affordable, ranging from R350 to R1000.
Apples and Oranges for Nolo Phiri will be available from tomorrow online.
