Nomzamo Mbatha on going nude on screen

Nomzamo Mbatha, who plays Thembi Kumkani in the thrilling drama Umlilo on chats about an upcoming nude scene on the show.

So the nude scene: how did you agree to it?

It was part of the story and the unfortunate part is people have the wrong idea of what it’s going to be like. It’s not a sex scene. Actually, it’s far from it. I must say, though, that it wasn’t easy. I agreed to do it because it’s part of the story. I’m lending myself, my voice and body to it. I was a bit scared in the beginning, but once the director sat me down and explained how it was really going to be, I knew I was in safe hands.

Is it something you’ve always wanted to explore?

Absolutely not! (Laughs) It was something I was against but as mentioned, I spoke to the director who changed my mind. Luckily, I work with an amazing team on Umlilo so I trusted the story and went for it.

How did you feel when you were shooting in front of the crew?

We shot this one on a closed set. The only people who saw me were the make-up artist, director, cinematographer and the wardrobe lady, whose job was to make sure the gown dropped as soon as they say action. The irony in this is that I shot it in front of a few people, but it’s going to be watched by millions of people.

How are you feeling about the way people will take it?

A lot of people, men to be specific, have been tweeting me asking when that episode will air and the funny thing is I keep telling myself that it’s not what people think it is. I think people are expecting something else.

How much of your body will we actually get to see?

You’ll have to watch the episode to see that!
