Paledi Segapo: designer to the stars


Paledi is one of the country's well-known and respected designers – best known for dressing both local and international such celebrities as Donald, Uzalo's Kay Sibiya, Kenny Lattimore and The Bold and The Beautiful actor Texas Battle. Palse_02 We had a chat with the designer about building his brand PALSE and his new ventures: How did you move from being in corporate as a business consultant to being a fashion designer? It started in 2007 when I busy with my thesis for my MBA, and I decided to choose the fashion industry as my topic. I then got drawn to it, minus the fashion part. Going into fashion design is being an entrepreneur. It wasn’t a big shift as remaining afloat, being profitable and retaining customers are similar to formulas in business. Where do you draw your inspiration from? I travel a lot so I draw inspiration for my designs from just about anywhere; it could be a beautiful building or mountain. It’s not tangible thing, it’s a feeling. How did you get to work with Donald? I met him through his then publicist, before he dropped his album and I had to create an image for him. I went for tailored blazers, suits and military look. What have been your highlights? In 2013 I had my own first billboard up on the Soweto freeway it was a big deal as a local designer to do that. Then, in 2015, I won African Designer of The Year, and Donald won best-styled artists twice at the Metro Music Awards in 2013 and 2015. What’s your focus for the year ahead? I want to focus on my label and other things like my business seminar [The Business Management of Fashion], which is for emerging designers to learn about the business side of things.
