Six hours away from Jozi, it might have been a long drive but once we arrived at the Crocodile Bridge as we entered the Kruger National Park, we were welcomed by wildebeest and impalas, which made the long trip worth it.
The calm that comes with being away, surrounded by nature is something I can’t quite explain. It was hot and humid but that kind of weather is great when you’re on a bushveld getaway.
We were treated to a spectacular lunch spread with yumminess for every palate. The mouthwatering lunch was served with a refreshing piña colada and some bubbly by the pool.
After lunch, I settled in my well-fitted private room. It’s very intimate, making it great for a ‘you and I’ retreat. It also has an outdoor shower with a great view, and a deck to enjoy sundowners with your man. I’m even tempted to dub the lodge the "perfect place to make babies".
The lodge also has great facilities, including a spa, gym, swimming pool with a view, WiFi and restaurant. I couldn’t explore everything because I was there for one day, but if you’re there for longer you can try everything at your disposal.
After refreshing ourselves, we went for a game drive and witnessed a breathtaking sunset, overlooking the river with hippos. We sipped on our drinks of choice while the sun took its sweet time setting. “ Everyone is a VIP at Shishangeni," quipped Siyanda Zindela, the general manager.
After such an eventful day, I dashed back to my room to freshen up before dinner – it was also the perfect time to enjoy that outdoor shower. And then, dinner under the stars anyone? Yes, please!
In conclusion, the setup is dreamy, secluded and is perfect for a getaway to unwind and de-stress. The staff is friendly, which made the stay that much more special.
If you’re looking for a great bush holiday, I'd highly recommend Shishangeni.
