e.tv’s Multi-award winning soapie, Rhythm City, celebrates its 10th birthday this year, having captivated audiences day after day with gripping storylines, deadly drama and a strong focus on socially-responsible storytelling, since 2007.
Rhythm City is set against the backdrop of the fast-paced South African music industry. Edgy action swings viewers between the streets and clubs of Soweto and the recording studios and radio stations of dynamic Jozi, with a wide range of fascinating characters.
“When we started working on Rhythm City, we didn’t think that we would still be going this strong 10 years later,” says Harriet Gavshon, Executive Producer of Rhythm City at Quizzical Pictures. “Creating gripping storylines for a daily soapie is challenging, but it’s a challenge that we take on with gusto.”
One of the show's unique aspects is its ability to incorporate real-life celebrities and musicians into the fictional action. Over the past ten years, stars like Kelly Khumalo, Khuli Chana, HHP, Khanyi Mbau, Kwesta, Slikour, Freshlyground, DJ Cleo and many more have shared the screen with the regular cast. Another element is its strong focus on socially-responsible storylines, including HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, rape and violence against women, in the hope of highlighting some of the problems which continue to plague South Africa.
With stories reflecting the real issues that its millions of daily viewers recognize, the grit and reality of the street frequently collides with the glamour and excess of the media and music industries. Often controversial and always gripping, Rhythm City is set for many more years on e.tv viewers’ screens.
Catch Rhythm City on e.tv weekdays at 7PM.
