It’s time to get all aboard the wine train (again!) as new research suggests a glass a day can cut the risk of stroke.
Wine lovers are constantly bombarded with health news about their favourite tipple - first it’s good for you and helps your heart, and then it’s bad and drinking it every day can cause cancer.
Well the latest research is in favour of a daily dose, and this time it’s been linked to lowering the chance of suffering from an ischaemic stroke, the most common type of stroke, by 10 per cent.
And it’s not just wine; the teams from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and the University of Cambridge found that drinking an alcoholic beverage of no more than 1.5 units (such as a small glas of wine) can cut levels of a protein that forms blood clots. An ischaemic stroke occurs when clots cut off oxygen and blood to the brain. Sufferers normally have to re-learn how to walk and talk.
Further results from the study showed that two drinks a day cut the risk by eight per cent. Results have been published in BMC Medicine and are based on the analysis of previous studies looking at over 20,000 stroke victims.
Researchers were quick to point out that heavy drinking can in fact cause a stroke. Heavy drinking can also raise blood pressure and lead to certain cancers.
“Previous research has found an association between alcohol consumption and lower levels of fibrinogen - a protein in the body which helps the formation of blood clots,” author Dr Susanna Larsson, of the Karolinska Institute, said.
“While this may explain the association between light to moderate alcohol consumption and lower ischemic stroke risk, the adverse effect of alcohol consumption on blood pressure - a major risk factor for stroke - may increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke and outweigh any potential benefit".
