How did the E! Host gig come about?

I was approached by E! to be a judge and mentor for The Search: E! Host South Africa and was thrilled to be a part of creating more locally produced African content for the channel.

How are you feeling about it?

International influences are so evident in our globalised world – that’s why ensuring local talent gets exposure on this platform within the E! brand is important in developing individual careers and supporting the industry overall. I’m excited to be part of the process to develop local talent for international exposure. I was blown away by the quality of contestants – we have such a rich culture and inspiring emerging talent. I’m delighted that with this show we can skyrocket someone’s career and develop their skills further.

Please tell us about your role on the show?

I’m a judge as well as a mentor. This puts me in a unique position to guide talent to success and be part of their journey. My maternal instinct kicked in, so having to choose to send anyone home was really hard.

What can we look forward to on the show?

Look out for some famous South African guest judges, and ultimately, root for your favourite to be the first-ever local E! host.

What kind of presenter are you looking for?

We were looking for someone who is passionate about E!, someone who embodies being good on camera with authenticity, a sound knowledge of pop culture and the entertainment industry, balancing journalism with entertainment, professionalism, and above all tenacity. I was looking for a unique and confident voice, to cut through so many others trying to do the same thing.

What else are you working on?

The Madiba BET series has recently launched in the US. I’m playing Winnie Mandela, with Laurence Fishburne taking up the role as Mandela. I am so excited as this was a dream role. I have also just been announced as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress at the National Film Awards UK for my latest movie role as Naledi Khama in A United Kingdom, starring David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike, coming from the BIFA nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the same role recently; I am over the moon.

The Search: E! Host South Africa airs on Wednesday at 8:55pm on E! (DStv channel 124)
