The benefits of chocolate

Chocolate may wreak havoc on your waistline, but in small doses it not only satisfies your taste buds but can enhance your beauty too.

How is this possible, you may ask? Keep reading as we divulge some of the biggest perks the sweet stuff has to offer.

First, you want to identify chocolate that is at least 70 per cent cocoa content – so drop the Nestle and reach for some good quality dark chocolate instead. You may have to pay a little more, but you only need a square or two to satisfy so it will last a lot longer.

The cocoa is known to reduce stress hormones, which can show up on our face and skin via breakouts and blemishes. By reducing the breakdown of collagen we’re left with fresher facades, fewer wrinkles and an overall brighter complexion.

Flavanols, a flavanoid found in chocolate, are antioxidants and have great benefits on your body. As well as the flavanols protecting against UV damage from the sun, they also fend off free radicals – an atom which is missing an electron and can cause damage to the skin’s surface by attacking other atoms. There have been studies that prove dark chocolate boosts hydration and thickness in the skin too, meaning you can nibble on a bit every now and then without feeling guilty.

Anti-inflammatory properties will prevent infections not only in your body but on the surface too, such as the scalp. The chances of suffering from a scalp problem are lowered by dark chocolate, which will also give you fuller looking tresses as it promotes blood circulation - hello thick roots!

Not to mention your hair will have an extra shine, so really we don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t incorporate dark chocolate into your diet as a treat for the tongue and your appearance.
