What are the causes of thrush and how does it manifest in the vagina?

Thrush is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans, and manifests as a white cottage cheese-like discharge in the vagina. It thrives in moist areas, which is why the mouth and vagina are common areas it invades.

The causes of thrush vary from a weak immune system, pregnancy, certain medications, stress, the long-term use of antibiotic and steroids. Certain irritants, like perfumed soaps and douches, increase the likelihood of thrush occurring.

Kwaw-Asante adds that another potential trigger is silk and tight-fitting underwear that restricts the flow of air into the vagina, making it easier for thrush to manifest.

Lastly, certain conditions like diabetes, HIV and other chronic diseases may play a role in women getting thrush.

What foods should you avoid when you have thrush and why?

Processed foods, sugars, alcohol, certain diary products like whole milk and processed cheeses. These foods allow the Candida organism to thrive and may worsen thrush.

What common mistakes do women make when they have thrush?

Often women will continue using irritating agent like douching or wearing tight underwear or prolonging antibiotic use. Some women directly apply food elements to the vagina, which has zero benefit.  The vagina is actually able to clean itself, always use plain water; there is no need for anything else.

It is important to identify, with the help of a gynaecologist, what the cause of the thrush is and to avoid it.

Tips to cure a thrush?

* Limit sugar and yeast containing foods.

* Treat or control any chronic medical conditions.

* Avoid long-term antibiotic use.

* Avoid perfumed soaps and douching.

* Stick to cotton underwear rather than silk.
