How to do an at-home peel

And the pursuit of perfect skin should be a top priority if you want your face to glow, and make-up to look flawless. Chemical peels may sound a little drastic, but a regular peel can give you a beautiful, radiant complexion.

A peel is a way to exfoliate your skin chemically, without abrasion, to even out a dull skin tone, fade out discoloration, unclog pores, reduce fine lines and make your skin glow.

But many of us, fearing a ‘Samantha moment’ like when the Sex and the City character left the salon with a bright red face, prefer to put our trust in an experienced beauty therapist when it comes to putting chemicals on our face. However, at-home peels are actually easy to use, and even dermatologists recommend them.

At-home peels are typically made with fruit acids, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, retinol, or salicylic acid. When using them, make sure you read the directions, as some are approved for daily use while others should only be used once a week.

It’s also a good idea to patch test on the side of your neck and wait a day to see if you have any reaction.

Three peels to try

Murad Hydro-Glow Aqua Peel

Murad Hydro-Glow Aqua Peel is a two-step system which works on the skin’s outer layer to reveal radiant, healthy-looking skin, minimise fine lines and wrinkles, and retexturise and brighten skin to reveal a youthful glow. Lactic and Glycolic acids gently exfoliate and smooth skin, while aloe extract and Vitamin B3 will soothe and nourish the complexion.

It comes with a pre-soaked Retexturising Swab to exfoliate the skin with glycolic and lactic acids, to reveal smoother and brighter skin. And for the second step, apply the Moisture Infusion Mask to deliver hyaluronic acid to the skin to minimise lines and lock in moisture.

After 15-20 minutes, remove the mask and pat in any excess product. Do not rinse and follow up with a moisturiser.

Skyn Iceland Nordic Skin Peel

These double-duty peel pads help deliver a one-two punch against dull, flaky, lacklustre skin suffering from chronic stress. They contain lactic acid and fruit enzymes to gently exfoliate plus natural antibacterials to sweep up dirt and oil so pores are left squeaky clean and skin looks fresh, bright and clear. They’re great for first-timers as the formula is extremely gentle and infused with calming emollients and potent antioxidants to improve tone and texture and diminish fine lines with zero irritation.

Caudalie Glycolic Peel

Caudalie’s peel takes just 10 minutes for the myriad of natural ingredients to work their magic when applied to dry skin. It clears the complexion, tightens pores and will give you a burst of radiance while gently exfoliating the skin. It also speeds up cell turnover at a fraction of the price of most retinoids. Simply use, rinse off and say hello to plump, glowing skin.
