It took a special touch to create the glam look for one of Mzansi’s favourite media personalities. The creator, pro make-up artist Neo Nontso, had barely stepped off the plane from Los Angeles, when we asked how she made sure Anele’s glowing make-up beautifully complemented her metallic and sheer outfit.

1. What inspired the beauty look that you created on Anele?

I saw the dress on the day of the Oscars, only five minutes before starting her make-up. I then decided that, because of the dress’s metallic detail, I’d stick to nudes and create a glowing but matte look for her eyes, lips and skin.

2. Please talk us through all the steps

Eyes: I created a matte eye with a creamy mint colour eye shadow. I also created a   silver undertone on the eyelid to keep the colour cool. I applied a dark grey colour on the curve of the eye for lift and shape. I wanted her eyes to be the focus, so I made sure they were attractive but not too bright.

Lips: I kept Anele’s lips nude to let her eyes make a statement. A matte nude lip was also ideal, as it wouldn’t smudge easily, since I knew she’d be speaking a lot. I also applied a lip liner to plump up the lips.

PICS: 2019 Oscars red carpet recap

Skin: Red carpet make-up is very different to everyday make-up, as it has to show perfectly through all the lighting and cameras. The trick is to apply a primer to smooth the skin. I used magnesium milk as a primer to create an even base for the foundation. It also helps the foundation to last under the heavy lights. I also applied powder that matches her skin colour, but was careful to not apply too much, or too many layers of foundation. I also contoured and applied highlighter to further accentuate the make-up and make sure that it shows under the lights.

3. How can other women make sure their glam make-up lasts like Anele’s when they are at special events

My go-to solution is to use setting powder. Instead of dusting the powder over your face, which actually removes some of the foundation, use a sponge to lightly press it over your foundation.

4. How was your overall experience with Anele on the red carpet of the Oscars?

It still feels surreal. I was in awe of the whole production and the stars. Anele is also so pleasant to be around, which made the whole experience unforgettable.
