Comedian Nonto Rubushe unpacks her Savanna newcomer of the year awards nomination

Tell us about yourself

I’m Nonto Rubushe, born and bred in Kwa-Zulu Natal and married with three kids.  I live for stand-up comedy.

Why did you get into comedy?

My career didn’t start off in comedy. I studied journalism and ended up on a totally different path in the insurance industry. After two years of doing jobs that didn’t serve and fulfill my dreams I decided to quit and I became unemployed for a month. During that period that’s when I came across an ad calling for up and coming comedians in the KZN region. Because I was always invited to MC local parties and it seemed the audience loved me, I used that experience for my audition, the producers loved me and as they say, the rest is history.

What does this award mean to you?

This is huge for me, considering that I’m just a small comedian from KZN who’s now recognised nationally by other prominent comedians in the industry. It’s the greatest honour I’ve received since I became a stand-up comedian.

Where do you see the future of females in comedy?

Women have been telling their stories about their lives, relationships, families and sex for decades now, and it’s for that reason female comedians will always have content that relates to most people.

Ahead of Women’s Day, how will you be celebrating?

I have a comedy show that I’m performing in during the day in Durban and later on I have my own Woman In Comedy show that I’ll be headlining.

Any last words to your supporters?

Always try to make a name for yourself no matter what industry you’re in. Let’s go out there and slay!
