“We had an out of body experience” - KFC Taste Kitchen R1m winners

Congrats on winning! How do you feel?

We are ecstatic; this has been such an amazing ride and massive growth curve for us both. We are excited and anxious to see what the future holds for us now that we know that anything is possible!

Please tell us about your journey with KFC Taste Kitchen.

Our journey was filled with ups and downs. If people remember we were in the top four for the first challenge, which was a great start. Following our first meal, we lost our mojo and couldn't quite please the judges. Our nerves and expectations got the better of us. In the following weeks viewers saw us make silly mistakes, like not adding enough salt and serving the judges raw dumplings! It took us a little longer than the others to find our feet and voice on the show. But as the weeks went our confidence and skills got better. Fighting for a place in top three was our break out moment and we rode the wave all the way to the win.

What were some of the challenges you faced during the show?

There were numerous challenges such as homesickness, loss of confidence and fatigue just to name a few. For us we kept each other strong by reminding each other that this was not going to be forever, and that we needed to stay focus on the course. We kept reading during our downtime for inspiration and practising new techniques.  We also tried our best to have fun and made sure we got enough sleep! The process was very demanding on the body and mind, so we tried to make sure we took care of basics such as drinking water, sleeping and doing yoga. When everything else failed we would just laugh at ourselves, we both have a good sense of humour.

Did being on the show test you as a couple?

The KFC Taste Kitchen was the definition of high pressure, and naturally we took strain as individuals from time to time. That said we could contain it and not take it out on each other. We worked on constructive ways to push each other. The environment we created was one of unconditional love, which was great and supportive. Our relationship has definitely grown stronger.

What was the first thing that came to mind when you found out you were the winners of the grand prize?

We both had an out of body experience, where you feel like you are watching your own real life movie! The feeling is surreal and we are still waiting to come back to Earth.

How has life changed since the show?

Truthfully, on the exterior not much has changed. But inside we are totally different people; KFC Taste Kitchen was a once in a lifetime experience. We grew so much as people and learned so much about ourselves. We are more confident from the experience and ultimately the win, Ali is cooking on a full-time basis now with his pop-up pan pizza gig and supper club, which we are launching soon.

What are your future plans?

We plan to keep innovating, keep learning and keep pushing the limits. We want to travel and have meaningful experiences, to learn from the world around us. We have so many ideas as well as things that we are already working on, but we are taking it step by step. Ali has challenged us to make R1million a year…Let’s GO!
