Virtual events have become the new normal due to the coronavirus pandemic and it was no different with this year’s Emmy awards which took place virtually on Sunday.

This year's virtual ceremony was particularly historic because the television academy gave out a record number of nominations to black actors this year which was also followed by a record-breaking number of awards given to black performers.

According to Variety, there were 102 actors who were nominated across the drama, comedy and limited series/TV movie categories with 34.3% of the acting nominees being black. This is an increase from last year’s nomination list which only included a 19.8% amount of black performers. This year’s list also tops 2018’s list which included 27.7% of black performers who were nominated - the previous highest record in the Academy’s history.
