Lelo started CHICA Travel randomly, in 2018, because she was craving a Durban weekend getaway but didn’t feel like going alone. She tweeted an image of some Americans holidaying in the Bahamas, and asked if there were any ladies keen on a shot-left to Durban. After receiving an overwhelming number of responses to that tweet, she asked the ladies to confirm their interest by paying a deposit. In the end, 16 of them met at OR Tambo International Airport, had a great weekend in Durban and decided to go on another trip in 2019.
The second trip took place in August this year, where Lelo assembled a group of 15 ladies for a trip to Thailand. She learnt that many black women want to travel but don’t always have people to travel with. She’s now committed to organising these group trips at least once a year.
Travel humbles and teaches you so much about yourself. I will forever cherish the people I’ve met through my travels. I tend to get bored easily with whatever hobbies I take on but in travel, I’ve found the one thing I’ll never tire of.
