If you’re tired of living form pay-cheque to pay-cheque with no room to breathe, finding a second job or starting your own business may be the answer.
Before you get a side hustle or part-time job, you need to consider a few things, says life coach Katlego Kolobe, the founder of Thrive Life Design.
“Ask yourself why you need a side job and be honest with yourself about your finances. If you’re doing well, a side hustle is a choice. But it’s a painful truth to face up to when your finances aren’t what you’d prefer to be, making a side hustle more of a necessity.”
There are three ways you can look at a side job: firstly, as one in which you use the skills you have; secondly, as something you’re passionate about or have knack for; and thirdly, as something you take on just for the money- a job you’re not necessarily passionate about or skilled at.
Tutor: If you’re in the finance sector you can tutor pupils or students in maths and accounting, if you’re in the engineering field, you can help out with science, or if you love teaching you can be a part-time lecturer at private institutions.
Consult: As a consultant, you can show other companies or individuals how it’s done or why they need your services. Start by compiling an inventory of your skills and experience. Then call potential clients that fit your skill set.
Blog: Blogging has become a lucrative passion for many young people in the digital age. You can blog about anything that interests you – food, fashion, beauty or entertainment. Find a unique way of expressing yourself that will appeal to brands.
Bake: You love baking and have lots of ideas and pins on Pinterest you’d like to try. Why not turn your passion into a business? With social media being such a big thing these days, it’s easier to showcase your creations. Just create a page on Instagram or Facebook for this purpose.
Transport: You can run a lift club in your area and take children to and from school each day on your way to work. Or, if you have two cars, you and your partner can share one and you can register your other car with Uber.
Sell: Selling online has become much easier thanks to platforms and directories like Gumtree, Cash Converters and OLX. You can sell used items or have a garage sale by collecting items from friends. Or, if it’s something that interest you, you can earn money from doing direct selling of products from brands that are already well known.
