Make-up sex can be a hot way to reconnect with your partner after a spat, but it could also be a red flag for your relationship. Our experts explain how to enjoy the benefits with none of the downsides. 

Make-up sex. Simply put, it’s that passionate, steamy “mad at you” sex that erupts mid-fight with your partner. The romp after the rage that makes it all worth the fight. The earth-shattering angry sex you see in movies, beautifully scripted to end arguments. But does this scripted narrative of make-up sex translate into the reality of our own lives? 

Intimacy and relationship coach Tracy Ziman Jacobs explains that arguing makes us feel distant from our partners. “Disagreements often leave us feeling criticised as well as resentful, and sex brings us closer together, allowing us to feel more connected. Sex creates more intimacy in relationships and provides us with an opportunity to communicate and apologise.”
