When I was seven, my mother signed me up for a programme called Playball. I started learning hand-eye coordination, speed and agility through different sports. While in grade 7 I was invited to participate in the Pro Series Indoor tournament in Cape Town, and shortly after I went on to represent the Western Province in both indoor and outdoor hockey.
I always incorporate strengthening exercises using resistance as it’s important to look after my joints and strengthen my muscles. I always have a protein smoothie after each workout to aid and assist in recovery. I set up a weekly plan and jot down small goals, especially with timed workouts like the beep test or a simple 5km run. That’s important to keep track of your progress and compete with your best time or results. That way, you’re able to see your plan and results.
I stretch or go for a massage at my favourite spa – steam; I sleep and fuel my body with the right nutrients. Resting is important and it allows your body to repair and rebuild itself.
