Afrobotanics recently hosted their ‘My Own Kind of Beautiful’ event at The Maslow in Johannesburg to commemorate the ending of International Women’s Month.

The event was essentially a gathering of women to share inspirational stories, network, interact with industry leaders in media and business and to walk away with a renewed sense of self-love and joy.

At the event, which had about 100 women in attendance, TRUELOVE Editor Khosi Zwane-Siguqa spoke on the importance of prioritising one’s self first, and how self-love is true love.

Miss South Africa Shudufhadzo Musida spoke about how beauty should shine from the inside out, and how external validation shouldn’t be a measure of self-worth.

Actress and author Ayanda Borotho spoke about how self-love stems from how we were taught to navigate life as children, and that true healing and true joy can only come from a place where we’ve acknowledged the role our childhoods have played in the adults we are today - and put in the work towards healing from those scars.

Entrepreneurs Mpumi Madubedube (founder of The San Hair) and Portia Mngomezulu (founder of Portia M skincare) had a panel discussion with AfroBotanics founder Ntombenhle Khathwane on the lessons they’ve learnt throughout their respective business journeys.

We just want to make sure that we are part of supporting the women that are trying to thrive in such difficult circumstances
Sibongile Morale, PR, Marketing and Events Manager

It was an afternoon filled with inspiration, emotion, healing, and a lot of laughter and crying.

The PR, Marketing and Events Manager for The Maslow, Sibongile Morale, says that the reason they partnered with Afrobotanics for this event was because they are big supporters of self-actualisation.

“Women are the backbone of our society, so for us, this was about supporting an event that’s going to empower women and equip them to reach their full potential,” she said.

“Currently, in the times of COVID, it’s very difficult for a lot of businesses to operate, so we just want to make sure that we are part of supporting the women that are trying to thrive in such difficult circumstances.”

Let’s take a look at some imagery from inside the event:
