How to combat adult acne

Typical signs of adult acne include a u-shape pattern of blemishes around the bottom of the cheek and chin area. These blemishes can become swollen and painful and there is a high risk of scarring, leaving residual marks on the skin.

The causes include hormonal changes, genes, unhealthy eating habits, the use of skin care products that aren’t suitable for your skin, pollution, sun exposure and stress.

Here’s how to keep unwanted blemishes at bay:

1.    Consult an expert

The first step to finding a solution is to get to the root of the problem. Seek the advice of a dermatologist or medical professional to assess the nature and degree of your blemishes.

2.    Manage your stress

Easier said than done, we know. However, try to find ways to unwind – this is beneficial to your health AND your skin.

3.    Watch your diet

If you are prone to blemishes, try to avoid high-glycaemic foods such as sweets, chocolate, refined breads and cereals, and fried or junk food.

4.    Cleanse and soothe

Blemishes thrive in a dirty environment. Cleanse your face morning and evening with a cleanser suited for your skin type.  Acne-prone skin can constantly become irritable, so soothe your skin and help restore its natural balance with a product like Avène Thermal Spring Water Spray.

5. Use specialised skin care products to target the blemishes

While there’s a wide range of products on the market, make sure you use a product that is credible and addresses your skin needs. Eau Thermale Avène’s TriAcnéal Expert offers a specialised solution for adult women who experience stubborn blemishes and residual marks.

Its key active ingredients include: Diolényl, which helps limit bacterial growth, soothe redness and reduce blemishes. X-Pressin gently exfoliates and smoothes skin texture. Retinaldehyde rejuvenates the skin and reduces the appearance of residual marks (it also has added anti-aging benefits). The product is also rich in the naturally soothing Avène Thermal Spring Water.

6. Protect your skin from the sun

UV rays can worsen the blemishes and irritation, and can also cause dark discoloration of blemishes and residual marks. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. Make sure the sunscreen is adapted to your skin type. If you have dry skin, opt for richer “cream” textures. If you have combination or oily skin, go for mattifying “fluid” options.

Eau Thermale Avène products are available at Clicks, Dis-Chem and Dermastore. For more information visit the Eau Thermale Avène website.
