Following the success of her Hlomu series novels, author and journalist, Dudu Busani-Dube is working with streaming service, Showmax, to produce a telenovela which is inspired by the three books.

Showmax has commissioned three seasons of 40 episodes each, inspired by the books: Hlomu the Wife, Zandile the Resolute and Naledi His Love respectively. The books follow the lives of the eight Zulu brothers, a formidable crime family, through the eyes of the wives they marry.

In a statement, Busani-Dube shared that viewers should expect to see new experiences in the telenovela.

“The Showmax series expands on the world created in the novel,” she says.

“For fans of Hlomu the Wife, who know all the scenes and the lines, be prepared for new experiences and surprises on screen.”

After years of speculations and suggestions from fans about who should play which role, the production has finally released the cast which features newcomer, Bonko Khoza who will play the lead role of Mqhele Zulu and rising star, Mbalenhle Mavimbela who will star as Hlomu.

“I read the book a couple of years ago and was a fan from the moment I put it down,” Bonko said in a statement.

 “Fast forward to 2021 when I got sent an audition for the series. I’m really excited to bring to life this incredible piece of writing. Dudu created a compelling work of art and now we get to breathe life into it, put faces to names and show it to the world,” he added.

The other Zulu brothers will be played by Kwenzo Ngcobo, Sipho Ndlovu, Abdul Khoza, Mondli Makhoba, and Thulane Shange.

The show will premier on Thursday, 11 November.
