On Monday morning, South Africans woke up to the sad news of veteran actor, Shaleen Surtie Richards’s passing.

According to Netwerk24, the 66-year-old was found deceased in a hotel in Cape Town on Monday. Speaking to the publication, actress Lizz Meiring said that Surtie-Richards had recently been battling with her health.

“She's been struggling with her health lately. She's had complications with her lungs and has struggled to breathe, but the cause of her death is not yet known. She was in Cape Town to film scenes for the kykNET telenovela, Arendsvlei,” Meiring revealed.

The award-winning performer was born in the town of Upington in the Northern Cape province. She was a qualified kindergarten teacher before pursuing her career in acting. Surtie-Richard’s career in TV, theatre and entertainment spanned over a period close to 40 years, with her first title role being in the film Fiela se kind in 1988. She has since appeared in a number of productions including 7de Laan as well as Generations.
