After controversially leaving record label Ambitiouz Entertaiment in 2019, award-winning rapper Mthembeni 'Emtee' Ndevu has released his first album as an independent artist under his own record label, Emtee Records.
Titled LOGAN, the naming of this album follows the pattern in which Emtee has titled each of his albums - after the people who are closest to his heart.
His first released in 2015 was titled Avery after his firstborn son. His second album Manando (2017) was named after a deceased OG of his from his neighbourhood who used to protect and guide him back in the day. This current album is named after his second-born son, Logan.
In its first week of release, LOGAN successfully debuted at number 1 on Apple Music across the 'All Genres' chart.
“I got to a point where I needed to focus and just see who has my best interests at heart, and I didn’t look too far because of the love I get at home,” he tells TRUELOVE.
Emtee tells us more about the making of LOGAN.
What was the inspiration behind your new album, LOGAN?
The inspiration behind my new album is my son Logan, family, my city and the continuation of my life story.
How would you describe the feel of your album?
It is mature, African, laid back, and musical.
How long had LOGAN been in production before you released it?
I cannot really tell but I know we worked on it for a year and some months. It could’ve been released last year already but COVID hit and we had less access to the studio.
What's your favourite song on the album?
I am not a fan of my own music but I like Uzoy’mela featuring Gwamba.
Did you expect the positive reception the album received the week it dropped?
I did not expect it to do so well because people counted me out and laughed at me when I lost everything. I was basically a laughing stock, so I was a bit nervous but I know my abilities.
What 5 songs are currently in your playlist?
I am currently listening to Flash Ikumkani’s music that we about to drop and Lolli who are both artists under Emtee Records.
