Malusi Gigaba’s maiden mid-term budget speech was primarily geared towards protecting his personal political future.

Business executives and politicians need to understand that we don’t need radical economic transformation. We need corporations to return to balancing the needs of all their stakeholders.

In his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Steven Covey points out that, in general, “We don’t believe the world we see. We see the world we believe”.

Take a short time-out from the Zuptagate emails, the imminent vote of no confidence in JZ, and other cause célèbre that are presently occupying our minds, and start thinking about the 2019 National Elections that many believe will deliver the cure for all our ills.

Politicians are supposed to protect citizens from corruption and rampant capitalist profiteering, yet the closed party list system is the foundation for a symbiotic relationship between them.

We are being led by the nose. We are so busy reacting to the latest outrages, perpetrated by our own government, that we are losing or have already lost our ability to think clearly.

I think it is past time for us to decide whether we want to continue feeding the fires of racial division sown by political rhetoric, or whether we are prepared to make a concerted effort to bridge the poverty gap.

How many more disappointments is it going to take before we realise that a different strategy is needed to counter Jacob Zuma’s state capture project?

While the ANC have allowed SADTU to reduce basic education to farcical levels of incompetence and ineptitude, other insurmountable obstacles have also emerged.

What picture emerges if we connect the dots differently? What if Jacob Zuma is the puppet master who “captured” the Guptas with promises of wealth beyond imagining provided they acted as his surrogate bankers and political facilitators?

When Frederick W Robertson said, "There are three things in the world that deserve no mercy - hypocrisy, fraud, and tyranny", he could have been talking about our current crop of politicians.
