This week on POLOTIKI, "Hands off the SG (secretary general)" was the theme as the ANC put out fires and flip flopped over its statement defending secretary general Ace Magashule against allegations in the book Gangster State: Unravelling Ace Magashule's Web of Capture.

The book, by investigative journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh, contains serious allegations against Magashule relating to his tenure as ANC provincial chairperson and premier of the Free State.

These include using undemocratic means to stay in power, influencing the awarding of government tenders and contracts, and demanding a 10% cut from those who were awarded contracts.

What does Magashule do? Does he challenge it in his personal capacity or does he let it slide?

His deputy, Jessie Duarte, also made headlines when she had a heated exchange with an eNCA journalist on Tuesday. Both Duarte and the journalist accused each other of being bullies after an altercation at a media briefing at Luthuli House.

In an interview with News24, Duarte described an edited clip of the exchange, which eNCA posted online, as one-sided and added that her apology was not shown.

The party said it held "cordial and robust" meetings with Duarte and eNCA. But will the recent headlines cost the ruling government at the upcoming national elections?

News24 senior political reporter Tshidi Madia also touches on how President Cyril Ramaphosa looks like a lone wolf on the election campaign trail.
