When celebrities date, they catch flights for dates at private destinations and have dinners at restaurants with a view, so, it's only natural that when proposing, they go all out in luxury, offering engagement rings that could buy a few pretty decent homes in Joburg's northern surburbs.
But, what happens to the 35 carat engagement ring when celebrities call the engagement off? Here are 5 celebrities who gave the ring back, sold it and kept it.
Kim Kardashian was married to NBA player, Kris Humphries, who had proposed in 2011 with a 16.21-carat center diamond and two 1.8-carat side diamonds. According to Us Weekly, Kim privately gave the engagement ring back after the divorce took place 72 days after their wedding. It is reported that she could not wait for him to sell the ring, which he did. The ring sold at a Christie's auction in NYC $749,000 (R11 million).
The American singer, songwriter, dancer, and model was engaged to the father of her first child, rapper, Future. The pair got engaged in 2014 and soon after called off the engagement. According to Page Six, Future proposed to Ciara with a 15-carat ring, designed by Avianne & Co. and worth $500,000 (R7 million). After the engagement was called off, Ciara returned the ring to Future.
According to Page Six, when Mariah Carey broke off her engagement to billionaire James Parker, after dating for 18 months in 2016, she kept the ring and wore it for a couple of years. It was only in 2018 that the singer’s assistant quietly sold the ring that was reported to be worth $10 million (R146 million) for $2.1 million (R30 million).
Basketball Wives LA star Evelyn Lozada was set to marry her long-time boyfriend ex LA Dodgers player Carl Crawford in August 2017, however they called the wedding off. Celebrity Insider reported that Carl proposed to Evelyn in 2013 and after suspecting him of cheating, Evelyn called off the wedding and kept her 14.5 carat diamond engagement ring. The ring is worth $1.4 million (R20 million) and Evelyn is planning to give it to her son when he’s older to invest in his finances.
According to VH1 Brad Pitt spent over a year designing a custom 16-carat engagement ring for Angelina back in 2012. After the world received the heart-breaking news of the pair divorcing, so much is still not clear. Although she’s still in possession of the ring, she has been see not wearing it and it is being reported that between her and Brad, the decision has not yet been made about who will get to keep the $250,000 (R3 million) ring.
