It’s time to celebrate everything LGBTQIA+ and be proud of your own or your friend’s/family’s/colleague’s strides to be who they are and love who they want.
There are lots of fun ways to celebrate Pride that range from the frivolous to the more serious, but all in the name of love.
Learn about the history of Pride in South Africa
Google it. Find a book. Watch a documentary. Learn about hate crimes and all the horrible things done to the LGBT community. Learn who Simon Nkoli is and other LGBTQIA+ activists. Just get learning.
Use your Facebook account to show your pride
Last year Facebook had a cute rainbow reaction for Pride Month, but it didn’t stick around all year. This year is a different story though as Facebook is launching a bunch of new fun stickers, frames, masks, effects, and more to celebrate Pride according to PopSugar.
Watch LGBTQIA+ films and shows
Especially ones with positive, complex depictions of LGBTQIA+ characters. Try the Oscar nominated Call Me By Your Name, the story of a one-weekend stand called Weekend, or ball culture documentary Paris Is Burning. Or try anyone one of these cool shows with great LGBTQIA+ characters from Channel24 or these great LGBTQIA+ series and movies– which include local shows too!
Pick up a book authored by a queer writer
There’s unfortunately not enough queer representation in in a lot of mainstream fiction, but there are queer authors whi have written books with queer characters in them. Check out this list of queer fiction written by queer writers you should be reading right now including Jacqueline Koyanagi’s Ascension and Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera.
Support a diverse art and culture scene
Whether you go to Cape Town’s Zero21 drag nights where they have drag queens performing onstage or try Beefcakes in Illovo or listen to LGBTQIA+ artists on your streaming service of choice, it’s great to support queer artists!
