We are all fundamentally looking for the same thing: We want to stop suffering and find a way to feel good and hold onto that feeling.

Mostly, we try to do this by trying to become better people (smarter, nicer, better looking, better behaved) or become more successful (acquiring more wealth and status and toys).

At some point, we wake up to the fact that these methods aren't working, just as I did.
