Beyoncé’s Coachella shows and her subsequent film Homecoming streamed on Netflix made headlines upon headlines since the show took place in 2018. And because Beyoncé has been involved in the significant roles of creating Homecoming, she has received a sum of nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards, one of which is for Outstanding costumes for variety, nonfiction or reality programming.
Beyoncé’s Coachella show was heavily influenced by the student culture of historically black colleges and universities in the U.S., and the costumes are one of the key factors communicate this. Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing, and Beyoncé’s stylists Marni Senofonte and Timothy White collaborated to make the costumes for the show that took place over two consecutive weekends, and shot for the Homecoming documentary.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the costume team were responsible for creating about 1 000 pieces for a cast of backup singers, dancers and a marching band amounting to 200 members - and up to 60 looks for Beyoncé.
The costumes included the signature “BAK” hoodies in yellow and pink, the two set of sequinned Destiny’s Child outfits, Beyoncé’s coordinated outfits with Solange and Beyoncé’s two sets of leotards, shirt dresses and her regal opening looks.
Speaking on the collaboration in a statement, Olivier says, “[Beyoncé has a strong, personal vision and love for fashion— one which I found it to be very inspiring. To be able to work closely with a master like her to find the best way to bring couture to performance and music, was a stroke of luck.”
This costume team is now in the running for the Emmy’s costume award for the Homecoming documentary. Nominated along with Beyoncé’s Homecoming in this category is Dancing With The Stars, Sandra Oh in Saturday Night Live, The Masked Singer and RuPaul's Drag Race, which won the award in 2018.
