Matric dances are always a lavish affairs - from luxury cars, to hair and makeup, to the extravagant dress. But these recent classes of affluent matriculants drip in designer gowns backed by an entourage of drivers, and hair and makeup artists.

While back in the day, the main brag for your send-off dance was limousine arrivals, in this era the kids sport South Africa’s top designers.

Second year Dramatic Arts student, Zenani Mashinini, comes from this class of matriculants who was dressed by Gert-Johan Coetzee for her high school big day. Zenani says since she was in Grade seven she knew that she wanted Gert to design her farewell dress.

She says: “Even though my ideas were scattered, finding the right design of the dress was easy because by the end of my appointment with Gert-Johan Coetzee, I walked out with a sketch of the design of my dress.”
