  • A virtual fashion show will take place during New York Fashion Week, and air on Tuesday, February 16, 2021. This marks the show's 10th anniversary.
  • The show features top emerging designers during New York Fashion Week - one of whom is Sello Medupe of local fashion house SCALO.
  • To mark the occasion, we marvel briefly at six SCALO moments we've appreciated over the past few years.

Founded in 2009, SCALO - the brainchild of Soweto-born Sello Medupe - has consistently represented quality and style.

The local designer's catalogue of work has been described as one that is "underpinned by passion and creativity, fused with the dynamism synonymous with a typical Johannesburg attitude - that of being modern, sophisticated and futuristic."

In 2018, the brand presented at Torino Fashion Week in Turin, Italy. This was Sello's first international showcase.

Speaking to City Press about Torino Fashion Week, Sello said the "opportunity would enable him to focus on shifting the scalo brand to an international target market."

And that vision has since materialised.

The highly anticipated Emerge! Leading up to the showcase - one of the show sponsors - Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, featured (in video format) one garment from each of the designers at each of their airports and train stations.

Under the theme: “New York is the Runway to the World of Fashion!”, a model will exhibited each designer’s garment at one of the following locations: Laguardia Airport Terminal B (Queens, New York), TWA Hotel; JFK Airport (Queens, New York), Christopher Street PATH station entrance (Manhattan, New York), World Trade Center PATH station platform (Manhattan, New York), and Port Authority Bus Terminal (Manhattan, New York).

The location selected by SCALO was JFK Airport.

The presentation was creative directed by Sello Medupe, modelled by one of his muses Blue Mbombo, and shot at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, by Essy Zimba.

SCALO has, of course, also showcased at Africa Fashion International (formerly known as Mercedes Benz Fashion Week) since 2013.
