Constantly upskilling yourself is very important and we're lucky that there are online courses that make certain skills available - for free.

If you find yourself with an increased amount of time at you disposal, why not use these invaluable resources to pick up a new skill?

From digital to entrepreneurial skills, here are five learning platforms that get a thumbs up from us. 

Udemy

This online learning platform has 100 000 online courses, many of which are offered for free. The courses available for free are wide-ranging and include lessons on social media management, personal development, computer science, entrepreneurship, blogging and many others. Find out more here.

Codecademy

Codecademy is great if you want to take courses at home or in any other place of comfort. This website offers free courses for different coding languages, all you need is an internet connection and a computer.

Codecademy says these courses are based on the fact that technical skills are changing the workplace, so it is designed to help you keep up with digital trends in the workplace. These courses are also suitable for absolute beginners: they offer an interactive experience that guides you through each course, quizzes that test your knowledge, and online public forums for support. If you like, there are also paid for courses you can take on a pro membership.

Alison

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, online learning platform Alison has rolled out a short list of courses for “workers who cannot work”, including courses on project management, MS Excel, and English reading, writing, listening and speaking courses from beginner to advanced levels.

Digital Skills for Africa - Google Digital Garage

This one is for the entrepreneurs and those who want to pursue digital careers. Digital Skills for Africa by Google offers a variety of free courses on digital tools that may help with school or your career, and boost your confidence along the way. The courses include interview skills, time management, long-term social media planning and building a strong online strategy, among others.

After completing the courses the site offers a Digital Skills for Africa Certificate of Online Proficiency. This is where you can access these courses. 

Udacity

This online learning platform offers tech courses on a part-time learning model that is self-paced. Udacity has a limited selection of free computer science courses featuring lessons on data structures, algorithms, artificial intelligence and introduction to coding, among others.
