Cracking the gender-glass ceiling of home ownership

Women are increasingly taking back their power in home ownership.
Women are increasingly taking back their power in home ownership.

Gone are the days where the patriarchy has been allowed to forefront the property market and women, particularly single women and especially single black women, are increasingly taking back their power in home ownership.

However, work on destroying that gendered glass ceiling is not yet done. While more and more entrepreneurially-minded women start taking the reins of owning property, there’s still a notable gender-gap in the market we’ve yet to fully overthrow.

But, if the past 25 years have been any indication – we're quickly and smoothly heading in a victorious direction of wholly liberating the female presence in home ownership.

In fact, since the birth of democracy circa 1994, the rate of female property ownership has steadily grown and looks to continue in that empowering streak.

According to data and stats from Lightstone, single females are increasingly becoming the forerunners of South African home ownership. Single women are also seen to be overtaking single men and married couples in home ownership – particularly in the inexpensive or lower-priced property realm.

Even in these shaky and uncertain economic times in South Africa, we are seeing more women actively applying for and being approved for home loans. This is because the power dynamics are shifting from the limestone financial institutions and banks to the open, hungry and capable hands of the woman with a dream.

If you’re considering getting your home, there are plenty of home loan agencies ready and willing to help you every step of the way.

In fact, SA’s first home loan comparison service, ooba homeloans, will help you not only acquire a home loan, but will also acquire a quote from every major bank on your behalf. This puts the power back in your hands allowing you to choose the best quote that works for you.

So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to further smash the gender-glass ceiling and build your fortress above it.
