  • We first got a hint of their beautiful love story when Mangaliso shared a short clip of their engagement on Tik-Tok. And we do relish a good love story, especially lately when most stories we hear are anything but lovely.
  • What started as a friendship ended up being a forever union between 24-year-olds, Refilwe Mashego and Mangaliso Kamnqa who are now engaged and expecting a baby.
  • We caught up with the couple who work at Spur, Vaal Mall, in Vanderbijlpark, south of Joburg and they tell us about how their love grew from friendship.

Refilwe tells us she was born in Bloemfontein, while Mangaliso was born in Bophelong, Vaal. The two met at work, and although they didn't hit it off immediately, soon enough, they started communicating and became close friends.

During this time, Mangaliso was involved with someone, and Refilwe just came out of a breakup.

They'd ask each other for advice about general things and they jokingly share that Refilwe would even ask Mangaliso for advice about guys as he would about women.

"It was not love at first sight, but as soon as we started talking, the feelings started developing," says Mangaliso, who eventually expressed his feelings to Refilwe.

After he got out of his relationship, they started seeing each other, and last October, they made things official.

Oddly enough, when asked about the highlights of their relationship, Mangaliso says, "The fights we have because they build us. The more we fight, the more we become closer and get to know each other's differences. And now I am sure that I am with the right person as I know her in and out".

On the other hand, Refilwe says, "It's Mangaliso's commitment to our relationship because I thought he was just another guy trying his luck. Also, he was in a sticky situation when we started talking, so I didn't think we would get to this point. The other two highlights were finding out that we are going to have a baby, and the biggest was the engagement".

Sharing more about her pregnancy, Refilwe says she would always tell Mangaliso that she is pregnant every month since they started dating and would take a pregnancy test.

This time around, she mentioned once again that she's pregnant, but he didn't believe it, so she took yet another pregnancy test, but it came back negative. Three days later, she took another one, and to her surprise, it came back positive.

"I was more happy than scared about the pregnancy," she says. Mangaliso adds, "For me, it felt amazing because as soon as I realized that I am serious about Refilwe, that's when I knew that I honestly wanted a baby."

Refilwe says she didn't see the engagement coming.

"We were fighting a lot of days leading up to the engagement because I was still hiding the pregnancy from my family. I told him that he knows my granny is a pastor, and she would be furious that I am pregnant and I am not married. I thought he should propose. I was initiating it because my family was already angry with me, especially my grandmother," she says.

The fights were so bad that she thought they weren't going to make it, and she would be raising her child alone.

Meanwhile, Mangaliso had long been planning the proposal with a bit of help from his friends.

"On the day I proposed, she had already left early for work as she had an early shift. I said to myself, 'this is it as we have been planning and planning, but nothing seems to be happening, so I think I should do this today when we met'. I got ready quickly, got a taxi, and went to Sterns at Vaal Mall," he says.

He bought the ring on the proposal's day because he didn't want her to find it since they live together. His manager helped with the planning. "When I first kneeled with the ring, she didn't believe it," he says.

Both families are happy about their engagement and the news of the baby. The couple is very close to Mangaliso's mother as she advises them on many things and can talk to her.

Mangaliso is still surprised that the proposal video did so well, as he only shared it on TikTok and didn't have many followers. It also wasn't part of the plan to share it on TikTok. It just happened.

He was shocked to find it shared on Facebook as well.   Mangaliso plans to go back to school next year, while Refilwe hopes to direct her attention to music as she's a gospel singer.
