A man from Massachusetts, US, roped in the police to help him propose to his girlfriend. In a viral video, he can be seen being escorted out of a restaurant by police as his girlfriend follows.

As he gets to the police vehicle waiting for him outside, he pretends to get in but suddenly turns around and goes on one knee. The woman he proposes to hugs him, and the two later take snaps with the officers who helped bring the surprise to reality.

The man's in-laws are said to have been present at the restaurant and in on the stunt. However, police in the area have reportedly since warned that although this particular stunt went according to plan, it was a once-off event. They further urged people not to flood their answering machines with crazy requests.

The proposal video was shared widely on social media. In a Facebook post shared by Now This News, one person commented, “I literally cannot wrap my brain around why anyone would even think of this as a proposal idea."

Other comments included:

"It's ridiculous for any police officer in uniform to be in on a scheme like this. Very unprofessional."

“I will accept your proposal, then order the police to take you away. I will come and bail you out the next day."

“Lifetime memory of a stupid, idiotic proposal. Hope she said no."
