  • The latest study from the University of Bath found drinking your first cup of coffee post-breakfast can reduce your risk of diabetes.
  • This is because caffeine can have a negative effect on blood sugar levels when drunk on an empty stomach after a night of broken sleep.
  • However, having a drink first thing in the morning is beneficial as your body has gone without water for eight hours or longer so it is slightly dehydrated each and every morning.

Instead of reaching for caffeine first thing in the morning try to make one of these your go-to drinks:

Lemon water

Either hot or cold, the benefits of lemon water are far-reaching. Firstly, two tablespoons of lemon juice contain nearly a fourth of your recommended daily vitamin C intake. It also aids digestion, hydration and even supports weight loss. Also, the vitamin C content is a godsend for skin, helping to reduce skin wrinkling, dry skin from ageing and damage from the sun.

Green tea

While green tea does contain caffeine, it’s less than half that of a cup of coffee. Green tea consumption has also been linked to a long list of health benefits, thanks to its high levels of antioxidants. It’s been shown to lower cholesterol, help prevent a range of heart-related issues, improve brain function and even protect against cancer. Add a slice of lemon for an added boost.

Apple cider vinegar

Weight loss, better digestion and boosted immunity are all associated with apple cider vinegar, which can be drunk straight up, mixed with water or added to food dressings. If you can’t stomach a shot first thing, simply mix one tablespoon of the good stuff in a glass of water and drink it that way.
