What causes the worst stains on teeth?
Staining can be caused by red wine, coffee, tea and smoking. Staining which occurs during the development of the teeth can be caused by some anti biotics or fluoride.

What is the best way to get white teeth?
Tooth whitening can either be done professionally or at home, but it's always advisable to have a dental consultation beforehand. Remember that fillings and crowns won't change colour during whitening and any open cavities could result in pain and damage to your teeth.

The bleaching agent for in-chair tooth whitening is a 30 – 35% concentration, whereas the percentage of at-home professional bleaching systems varies between 5% to 15%. If tooth whitening is not effective, veneers are another option.

Does bleaching destroy the enamel of your teeth?
No permanent damage is caused to your teeth. Tooth whitening works by softening the enamel and penetrating the dentine, where the stains are dissolved or removed.

For 24 to 48 hours afterwards, you might experience sensitivity as the enamel hardens and insulates the teeth again.

It's advisable to follow a `white' diet for 48 hours directly afterwards, so no red wine, black coffee and so on.

Are amalgam fillings bad for you?
Yes, they are. They are not cosmetically pleasing, and mercury vapour is continuously released while you chew.

Various studies have linked heavy metal toxicity to disease although not everyone is susceptible and presents symptoms of metal toxicity. It's best to speak to your dentist for more information.
