Influencers all over the world have been using the app to show off great makeup hacks, beauty secrets and hair tricks, so let’s see if they actually work.
Tik Tok is a lot of fun. There are all sorts of videos on the platform, from fun gags to finance tips and even self-care guides. But Today we’re trying out some popular beauty hacks and seeing if they actually work.
Now, I’m not a big makeup person (I usually just do my eyes and lips every day), but I do like doing a full face every now and then for a special occasion. I’ve never thought of doing it “backwards” as I’ve always gone with the conventional route and it’s worked every time. But I gave this a try and it worked like a charm.
I moisturised my face first with my daily moisturiser and added my SPF. Then I used translucent powder, setting spray and then applied my foundation. My skin looked flawless and I used less foundation than normal. I definitely think this is a winner.
Bobby pins for perfect winged liner
Now, I’m going to toot my own horn here. I am very good at doing winged liner freehand, but this hack is still really great and even more so for those of us who can't get the hang of doing a winged eyeliner freehand. It took a lot less time than I normally would as there was a stencil for me to work with. A winner too.
Want your brows to stay in place? Want them to be fluffier and fuller? Try soap brows. I got a little mascara wand from Edgars Beauty, but I’m sure you can ask at a local Clicks, etc as well. I then rubbed it over the damp side of a bar of Dove soap and applied it to my brows like in the video below and filled in the little spaces where they were a bit sparse. They looked very natural and didn’t move all day, but I wasn’t really that impressed with this one.
Dark knees with lemon and hot water
I genuinely didn’t see this one working, but I saw a difference after trying it for a few days. I don’t really have dark knees, but I tried this anyway. I do have dark armpits and I’ll try it there next to see if it works too. Please don’t try this on freshly shaved legs. It will sting.
Ice instead of a jade roller
I was sceptical about this one too. But it did actually make a difference. I was a little less puffy after doing this a few times over the course of about half an hour or so. It’s messy and cold, as the ice melts all over you, so definitely not the best way to do it, but a cheap hack that would probably work better in summer.
So face shaving is the technique of using a tinkle blade or razor to shave the dead skin cells and fine hairs off your face. It’s very popular online and is very similar to dermaplaning which beauty professionals do with a surgical exfoliating blade according to Healthline.
I read this article from Refinery29 where Jacqueline Kilikita did face shaving with a clean blade and nothing on her skin which is contrary to the videos where many Tik Tokers use an oil or serum. So, I decided to do both ways. On the left side of my face, I applied a serum and, on the right, I applied nothing.
The side with the serum seemed to work much better, took more hair and skin off but also felt softer. After a few days, both sides were still soft, but the side that had been done with the serum felt slightly softer and looked brighter.
