WATCH | 3 foods proven to boost skin health

accreditation

A healthy diet can boost the health of our skin. Here are three foods with proven skin health benefits.

1. Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain a red pigment called lycopene. It's a plant nutrient with antioxidant properties that are also good for our skin.

So what are antioxidants? When skin is exposed to sunlight or UV light, it comes into contact with free radicals -- highly reactive molecules that can damage the skin and lead to premature skin ageing. Antioxidants like lycopene can neutralise free radicals.

2. Sunflower seed oil

It might seem unassuming, but this oil is liquid gold for our skin. Sunflower seed oil is rich in vitamin E, which is also a powerful antioxidant. Studies have shown that regular consumption of sunflower seed oil also has anti-inflammatory effects, and vitamin E also helps our bodies produce collagen.

3. Sardines

Our skin protects us from dirt, bacteria and toxins. And the skin's major line of defence is the natural lipid barrier made up of dead skin cells and the skin's natural fats. Fish, such as sardines, help protect the skin's lipid barrier, and fish oils are high in omega 3 fatty acids, which studies have shown are beneficial to skin health and appearance.

Although these foods are great skin boosters, they should be part of a healthy and varied diet.
