  • For the first time since Covid-19, New York Fashion Week is back in real life.
  • Everyone who enters the live shows has to be vaccinated, preferably wearing a mask indoors, and layouts have been changed to accommodate social distancing.
  • In terms of fashion, guests showed up in some Y2K trends that are making a comeback, and, below, we share our top bare midriff street style looks.

After more than a year and a half, New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is back, with more breathing room, and a schedule as crazy as it always was.

As the crowds make their way to view the Spring/Summer 2022 collections, vaccination cards in hand, we're in the virtual front row on the lookout for the newest trends on the streets of The Big Apple.

But first, how has NYFW changed since pre-Covid times?

According to Dominic Kaffka, senior vice president of IMG Fashion Events, which hosts NYFW among other global events in more than 30 countries, it's as crazy as it's always been, but making sure everyone is safe is non-negotiable.

"Everyone who enters the building at Spring Studios here at New York Fashion Week has to be vaccinated. There are really no exceptions. We strongly recommend also to wear a mask indoors because we also want to be a role model for other industries," says Dominic, speaking to AP.

Dominic also shares that the layouts have been adjusted to fit Covid protocols and accommodate guests in a safer environment.

"We're better than ever and bigger than ever, and we're excited to get people back to work in the creative industry. But, in the end, I have to say the schedule is still as crazy as it always was and there are still up to 15 shows per day, on the hour," says Dominic.

"People are running through the city, which is a good thing, really. And I think everyone has the stress, the excitement of running from show to show, catching an Uber quickly, going for lunch somewhere, meeting friends that you haven't seen for one and a half years. So I have not heard anyone complain about the stressful schedule. That is a thing, I think, of the past because everyone is really happy that the event is back."

Now that we know everyone is safe, social distancing and wearing their masks indoors, we have to talk about fashion. It's almost as if everyone had the same mood board when deciding on their street style looks as they attend the various shows.

Recently, W24's Carmen Williams wrote an article where she asked if 2000s fashion is back, and the streets of New York have answered.

Editors, buyers, stylists, fashion enthusiasts and influencers came out to play in the biggest Y2K trends, including mesh dresses, barely-there crop tops, low rise jeans, exposed thongs and corsets.

But it was all the exposed midriff looks that did it for us as guest after guest put their own twist on the 'back by popular demand' Y2K trend.
