According to EWN, seventeen countries gained independence from European colonisers between 1958 and 1963. The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was founded on 25 May 1963, which inspired African Liberation Day, now know as Africa Day, to honour that anniversary.

Since becoming a democratic country in 1994, South Africa was entrenched as part of a larger African family and became a founding member of the African Union, which replaced the OAU.
