Miuccia Prada is the granddaughter of the luxury fashion brand's founder, Mario Prada. She took over the family's fashion house as head designer in 1978.

Since then, the Italian designer has also founded subsidiary fashion brand Miu Miu, and now has an estimated net worth of $5.52 billion.

While Miuccia’s designs shine on the runway, her interviews reveal her feminism, communism and lifelong aim to disrupt fashion’s status quo.

These are Miuccia Prada’s most memorable quotes:

She’s always aimed to change the perception of what is beautiful and is not scared of ugly.

Fashion fosters clichés of beauty, but I want to tear them apart.

If I have done anything, it is to make ugly appealing. In fact, most of my work is concerned with destroying – or at least deconstructing – conventional ideas of beauty, of the generic appeal of the beautiful, glamorous, bourgeois woman. Fashion fosters clichés of beauty, but I want to tear them apart.

The designer’s work was very controversial at first, as it was different to avant-garde and classic styles of the time, but she was used to setting trends.

People used to laugh at the way I dressed.

All my life I was the first to be dressed in a certain way. Evidently that is my quality. I was like that at school. Maybe then it was a little silly, but I always liked to be dressed differently and before the others. Now in my work it is an advantage, but people really used to laugh at the way I dressed.

Be queen of the stupid!

The moment they say [I’m an intellectual designer], I want to be the stupid one because I always want to go for the opposite. That cliché means you’re serious and boring. That, I hate. So probably after a comment like that I want to do a show that is so stupid. Be queen of the stupid!

I hate the idea of everyone wearing Prada.

I am naturally attracted to opposites; I love luxury and yet I hate it. I struggle between democracy and exclusivity. I hate the idea of everybody wearing Prada.
