  • The Nanny is a classic 1990s sitcom, starring Fran Drescher as Fran Fine, that ran from 1993 to 1999.
  • Brenda Cooper, the costume designer behind Fran's enduring, resplendent style legacy is the reason we still reference the 'Fran Fine Formula' that defines peak '90s fashion today.
  • If you’re as big a fan of Fran’s looks as we are, you’re in for a treat as we countdown her top 10 best looks from The Nanny.

In an interview with i-D, Emmy award-winning costume designer, Brenda Cooper, said; "When I created the show, I wanted it to transcend the test of time."

And if you remember watching the show - or you've recently streamed it - you might be aware that one of Fran's shtick's was bantering about how she's what this same i-D article called a "Svengali of the sale rack".

Brenda explained to i-D that "there was a designer [Fran] loved, Todd Oldham. So Todd was an inspiration and [they] worked closely with him and he'd lend [them] stuff".

Racked with Dolce & Gabbana blazers, Marc Jacobs, Todd Oldham (so much Todd Oldham!), Donna Karan separates, and Moschino looks as staples in her wardrobe, one might say Fran dressed extravagantly for a nanny, but Brenda Cooper knew exactly what she was doing.

And knowing Fran was an avid bargain hunter, who are we to actually audit?

Here, we countdown the top 10 best looks from The Nanny. Plus, honourable mentions.

10: Red sequinned halter dress

In the first episode of the series, we see Fran wearing this showstopping sparkly sequinned dress with a high slit. This outfit immediately introduces us to Fran’s bright personality.

9: Union Jack Moschino outfit

We know that Fran loves a good patterned suit. In the season 4 finale, Maxwell (Charles Shaughnessy) and Fran go to London and she certainly dresses for the occasion.

The nanny wears her hair slicked back with a red headband that matches perfectly with her mini skirt, her signature pantyhose and a statement flag blazer.

8: Candy wrapper dress by Jeanette Kastenberg

In a look that might look like a Halloween costume on some people, Fran looked runway-ready in this dress. We couldn’t help but be distracted by this sweet outfit.

7: Striped sweater and denim skirt

The autumn colours of this sweater are very flattering on her and the denim skirt is a perfect match for this casual look. This outfit has us convinced that while red may be her signature colour, she can clearly pull off a more subdued look as well.

6: Little black dress & Moschino heart bag

Fran wore this dress to go on a date with a guy who turns out to be a mobster. There’s no question that every girl needs to have a staple black dress in their closet, and Frans’ LBD is enviable.

It’s just too bad that she wastes it on this date that goes awry. The dress was complimented with black stockings and accessorised with a red heart-shaped Moschino clutch.

5: Leather vest and plaid skirt

If there’s anything we can remember Fran Fine wearing, it’s red, plaid, tights, turtlenecks, and leather. And this outfit is the perfect culmination of all of her standout looks.

Her scalloped plaid skirt is paired with a white turtleneck and a leather vest with a zipper up the front. This outfit can still be worn over 20 years after the original episode aired.

4: All black outfit with Moto jacket

This jacket is definitely one of our favourites.

In this Season 2 episode, Fran is wearing an all-black look with thigh-high boots and a cropped Michael Hoban North Beach Leather Moto jacket complete with gold details. This look is more edgy than what we usually see her in.

3: Red turtleneck with Moschino checkered skirt

The fitted red turtleneck and black-and-white mini skirt both scream Fran Fine. It’s both funky and flattering.

2: Cropped leopard blazer and matching skirt

This is far from the last time we see Fran wearing animal print, but this first season outfit is especially memorable.

The only thing that makes this look - paired with a black turtleneck - even better, is seeing little Gracie (Madeline Zima) wearing a mini version of it when they compete in a mother-daughter pageant.

Confirmation that red is indeed Fran’s colour.

The nanny is the master of layering outfits, which we see several times throughout the series. But nothing beats the classy, flattering look of this iconic dress featuring Fran’s trademark hues.
